PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at CVAA for your thoughts, prayers, cards and flowers while I was in River Bend Hospital and the Good Samaritan Rehabilitation Center. It is great to be home. Soon I should have healed and have my strength back and be able to resume teaching and helping at the Art Center.
Thanks to everyone who helped with the delivery of the books, those who helped at the board meeting and volunteered for future projects.
I would especially like to thank Kathy Phillips and her student helper, and Pat Weaver for all the extra work and time they put in entering and organizing the Children’s Art Show. It is bigger and better this year than ever before. Thanks to Kathy Phillips, Pat Weaver, Terry Magill and Kathy Baker for hanging the show. Last but very appreciated is all the work Anastasia Savenko Moore put into the show. Be sure to attend the reception and awards April 2, 6:30 – 8:00 p.m.
On April 6, the office of president will be turned over to Kathy Phillips and the rest of the new board will also be installed. Kathy has lots of new ideas and will be a great president. Please support her and volunteer to help at the Center. We have the one-day book sale on April 25 and a few days later we start setting up for our annual plant, rummage, books and baked food sale.

Painters News:
The Crosby painting classes will probably resume the middle of April, when I’m able to drive again. In the meantime, keep painting. Flower show in May and the Coos County Fair in July.
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Merriel Seller Stinchfield. Sympathy to her family.

Student Art Show – March 23 – April 17.
The number of student entries far exceeded organizer’s expectations! Nearly 200 students entered, with many of them entering two and three pieces of art. These are mostly paintings and drawings, but there is a nice display of sculptures from younger students and from Coquille High School. There is a good representation from ages 3 – 19 and the Art Center is filled from ceiling to floor with color and beauty! Entries came from Powers, Coos Bay, Bandon, Myrtle Point and Coquille. Be sure to take time to enjoy them as they fill both rooms on the first floor. There will also be a reception for the young artists on Thurs., Apr. 6, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and everyone is invited to attend the festivities.
CVAA’s Almost Everything Sale
CVAA’s annual “Almost Everything Sale” will follow on the heels of our Book Sale (open to the public Apr. 25 & 26. It is scheduled for the weekend of May 1 – 3rd. Members can bring in items that week preceding the sale. Now is that time to clean out those closets and garages…just make sure the items you bring are clean and in good condition. Plants, baked goods, books, toys, clothing, furniture, household items, videos, collectibles, artwork,…almost anything will be accepted! If you would like to volunteer to help on any of those days, you would be more than welcome. You can leave your name with either Kathy Phillips or Pat Weaver.
Quilter’s News
First of all, a great big thanks to each and every one of you who helped to make the Quilt-a-Thon such a successful, enjoyable day. There are far too many to try to list, which reaffirms the fact, that when many people pull together – it WORKS! There were 43 people who signed the guest book (I know of at least one who didn’t sign) and folks came from as far away as Lakeside, Winston, Powers, Port Orford and even one from Bose, Id, who was visiting a friend. We completed putting together between 30 – 35 CARE quilts. Some folks even took them home to finish up and then return, and there were those who chose to piece together tops. One of those was a cute 10 year old girl – amazing! Many stayed all day. These will bring comfort to many kids who are at risk here in Coos County.
A special thanks to Kathy Phillips who did marvelous publicizing. NW Natural Gas provided a huge roll of batting plus gifts for drawing (each person received a free ticket), including a $25 gift certificate, won by Sherri Martinez. Sleepy Lee Quilting (Shirley Lee’s business) also provided a coupon for $25 and Sharon Arrant won that one. CASA provided some snacks and several of their volunteers were here to help.
Keep May 20th on your calendar to go as a group to the Sutherlin Quilting group. Keep tuned for more information.
Jean Olson had a kidney stone removed this last week – our thoughts are with you – we miss you.
Sherlyn Hiatt has been through a lot in the last couple of weeks – surgery and skin graft on her nose.

Woodcarver’s News:
Larry Roberts is the featured carver at the Lawrence Gallery, Salishan during March & April. Stop by and see the show – it’s about 5 miles South of Lincoln City. There was a reception honoring Larry on March 7.
The Southcoast Woodcarvers’ Show is April 25-26, 2009, at the North Bend Community Center. Featured carver will be Bill Hanna. There is no admission fee charged. We’ll have demos through the weekend and anyone is welcome to watch or participate in them. Members of the carving group who want a table need to get it paid for soon – tables are going fast. The Art Center will have a table there.
There will be lots of opportunity to purchase wood carvings and wood turnings, books, tools and supplies and view amazing carvings and turnings at the show. The woodcarvers are selling carved key chains – cowboy boots, logging boots and axes. Cost is $1 to $3, and they are carved from basswood, cedar and myrtle. For more information contact Rick Miller at 541 260-5328 or one of the other carvers, or they will be available at the show.
The Capital Carvers Show is April 4-5 in the brand new Senior Center in Salem, Or. There is no admission and there are lots of vendors and carvings for sale.

Caretaker’s Notes
As you may be aware, we recently volunteered to handle stocking supplies for the daily upkeep of the Art Center. Sometime between Feb. 26 & 27, a nearly full roll of white trash bags was removed from the supply cabinet. We realize that supplies are needed in other areas of the Center and that members do have free access to this area. However, we did not see the roll of trash bags relocated anywhere, so we don’t know how they are being used, and request any portion not used be returned to the supply cabinet. If you need to remove more than a few items, please let us know so we can plan accordingly to keep the supplies in stock. We have a mail slot in the office for messages which we check regularly, or if you wish to send an e-mail, the address is coquille.art@gmail.com. Thanks very much for you help with this!
