COQUILLE VALLEY ART ASSOCIATION

NEWSLETTER – JULY 2009

The objective of this association is to dedicate its resources to promote, educate and assist the expression, development and awareness of the arts and artists throughout the community.

JULY CALENDAR:

June 15 – July 24 – All Member, All Medium Art Show/Sale

July 6 – Board Meeting 10 a.m.

July 24 – All paintings must be picked up.

July 25 & 26 – Enter Coos County Fair.

July 28 – Aug. 1 – Coos County Fair.

July 28 – 31 – No Crosby and Weaver Art Classes.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Board Meetings - The next board meeting is Monday, July 6th.  It starts at 10 a.m., and I promise that it will be much shorter than the last one!  The Board was so patient and no one complained to me, but I want to encourage all members to attend and realize they aren’t likely to do so if the rumor gets out that meetings could last more than two hours!

Floors to be refinished – We have not yet received the $5,000 check from the Rotary Club, but John Mattie Floors of Coos Bay is scheduled to start refinishing the two classroom floors upstairs on July 27th.  This will be done during Fair Week and the two classrooms will not be having classes during that time.  The furniture will all have to be removed from those rooms prior to the work, and we appreciate anyone who can help with that.

Building Fund – We continue to accept donations to the Building Fund.  Once the floors have been refinished, money will be saved towards painting the Art Center and the cottage, and other maintenance projects.  Thank you to those who generously donated.

Show and Sale – Thank you to all those members who brought things in for the Show and Sale, and those who generously gave up a Saturday for the “Artist’s in Action” day.  It is appreciated.  The more days we invite the public in to our facility, the better it is for us.

Coos County Fair – Fair week is from July 28 – Aug. 1st.  Members are encouraged to enter art work July 25th and 26th.

New Brochures – I will be working to update the Center’s brochure and have it ready by Fair time.  Along those same lines, we need to make a concentrated effort to bring in new members starting in September.  The Board is interested in finding ways to reach out to families and children too.

McKay’s Receipts – Keep them coming!  Our reimbursement amounted to about $11 (which doesn’t seem like much), but I was reminded that is about the same amount as three new members for the month.

Handicap Ramp – It has been brought to the attention of the Board that the railing on the side of the handicap ramp is too high, and it is also wobbly.  This will need to be corrected.

Caretakers – Thank you Kerin and Charlie for keeping the Center looking so good!  Also, a big thanks to Kerin for keeping our web page updated.

Pottery Class for Children – Vicki Gonzales has started a beginning pottery class for children on Wednesdays.  Good to see those young faces around here!

To contact either Kerin or me, the Art Center’s e-mail address is coquillevalleyartassoc@gmail.com.  Kerin can be reached at coquille.art@gmail.com.

Painters News:

The show at CVAA for June and July is any subject, any medium and must be for sale.  All paintings need to be picked up by July 24 as our floors will be sanded and refinished starting July 27.  There will not be any place to store paintings so if you are unable to pick up your paintings, please make arrangements with a friend to get them.

The Country Art Store has been very successful.  Thanks to all who donated items, those who worked pricing and selling, and those who were our customers.

Would you like to demonstrate painting, any medium, at the Coos County Fair?  You can earn a 1-day pass into the Fair buy demonstrating July 28 – Aug. 1, for 4 hours.  Anna Crosby needs to know by July 10 if you are interested so your name can be submitted to the Fair office for the pass.  Volunteers are needed to help register and place the paintings and crafts at the Fair on July 25 and 26.

To enter the Fair, check the book for the different classes, only 1 entry per class.  Entries will be accepted July 25 & 26, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.  As you enter the art building, stop at the table and get an exhibitor’s number.  Then go to the tables taking in the paintings and crafts.  The clerks will help fill out the entry tag and give you a claim check stub.  You may enter a total of 7 pictures and/or 7 crafts.  All work must be original, created in the past year and entered in the name of the artist.  Except for student classroom work, copies will not be hung.  If paintings are for sale, show the price.  Sales will be completed after the Fair.  All items must remain in place until the release time, Sunday, Aug. 2, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Remember, anyone who has painted for 5 years or more, regardless whether the work was done in a classroom, should enter the ADV – Advanced Amateur Division.  If you accept payment for giving instruction, you need to enter in the Professional Division.  If you have any questions contact Anna Crosby or Pat Weaver.

Anna Crosby and Pat Weaver will not have classes July 28, 29, 30 and 31.
