PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:
Successful Fundraisers. Last month’s book sale brought in over $600, and we earned over $1,700 at the Almost Everything Sale! I would call that very successful, especially given the economic climate of our area. A big thank you to everyone who donated, organized, priced, sold and cleaned up. We couldn’t have done it without the large number of volunteers. I want to give special thanks to Maryellen Hanson, Pat Weaver, Anna Crosby, Anne Soucy and Geneva Snodgrass because of the extra hours they put in before, during and after the sales. We sold baked goods from Anne Soucy and Shirley Lee. Maybe this is an area to improve next year – breads and jams sold especially well. The Plant Sale went well too, especially the tomatoes and berry plants.
New Fund Raising Ideas? We must continually think of ways to earn more money to stay ahead. Unfortunately membership dues are not enough to keep the Center going. Some ideas that were discussed; sell original artwork cards and bookmarks, jigsaw puzzle with photo of area or original artwork on it, charge for special shows like other art centers do – for instance, one where we open entries to the public but charge them a small fee to exhibit. Ideas?
Good News/Floor Grant! Thanks to Lauretta and Tony Spenader’s encouragement, I applied for a grant to our local Rotary Club – they have a fund with money to be used for local projects. I received word early in May that they will be giving us $5,000 toward restoration of the floors on the top level! We did receive some donations from our members and just need about $1,000 more to totally pay for it. We received bids from two contractors, both of whom thought they could accomplish the refinishing this summer, hopefully during Fair week.
I am planning to write another grant to the Coquille Tribal Community Fund. They have an area for historical preservation that I think we fit in very well. If you have ideas, let me know.
New Members – We welcomed seven new members this month!
Building Fund Donations Accepted – We will continue to accept donations and we are starting a Building Fund to pay for future building improvements and emergencies. I want to make it VERY CLEAR that there is absolutely no obligation to donate! I know times are tough for everyone right now. If you can give, great! Every dollar counts, and we have forms so that you can make it tax deductible.
Gutters Cleaned Out - Thanks to an alert by Pat Haley (he took me outside to show me several inch-tall trees and grasses growing in the gutters). These are a fire hazard as well as the weight could potentially bring down the gutters. We received bids and chose Drip and Drizzle to do the work.
Floral Show – This show will run through June 6th. I am pleased that over 20 artist members are represented. The artwork is mostly paintings, but we also have pottery and wood carvings. Hopefully we will have something from the stained glass department. (The problem is how to display it safely). Please take time to come in and enjoy, if you have not done so yet.
June 6th Open House/Gay 90’s – We will have an OPEN HOUSE at the Art Center, Sat. June 6th, from 1 – 4 pm. We also plan to have a table set up in Coquille at their Gay 90’s celebration. If you would like to help, contact Anna or myself.
Show and Sell Sale – (June 15th – July 24th). Members with items to sell should bring them in between June 8 – 12th. They will be on display and for sale through July. I plan to actively advertise this.
“Artist’s in Action” – (Sat. June 20th, 10-3). Member artists from all departments are encouraged to bring additional items to sell (such as cards, prints, pots, bookmarks, small pieces). We encourage all departments to have one or more members who are willing to demonstrate their craft. This can be done upstairs in the main rooms, or in your own department. The public will be invited and refreshments will be served.
McKay’s Receipts – If you shop at McKay’s Markets, bring in your receipts. They reimburse non-profit organizations 1% of every dollar spent.
May 30th Clean-Up – I am organizing an outdoor clean-up on May 30th, 10 am to 1pm. There is ivy that needs to be cut back, acacia trees that need to be removed, blackberries and brush eliminated, etc. If you are able to help and have tools that would help, come to the Center that Saturday.
Next Meeting – June 1st at 10:00. Everyone is invited, especially if they have positive energy and new ideas!
Center’s E-Mail Address – coquille valleyartassoc@gmail.com.

The Coos County Fair is only a couple months away, and the Fair relies on volunteer help. I would like to take this time to ask for more volunteers to help hang the art for the Art Dept. at the fairgrounds. My husband, Tom, and I have helped hang the art for the past 4 years and it is a lengthy process. With the help of more people, the job would go much faster and help to get everyone out of the building earlier. The process starts after the last of entries are taken in on Sunday, before Fair opening. Inventory of all entries are conducted and then hanging of all the pieces starts.
Please, we ask for help – come on out and be a part of the County Fair this year. If you have any questions and can volunteer, please give me a call at 396-3038. Thank you.

Quilter’s News
Today is May 16. It’s nice and sunny – hopefully this is not the only day of summer. The Art Show for May is Flowers. Thanks, girls for bringing in some quilts to hang. Don’t forget to start bringing in fabric for our sale in October. Anne and Linda received a nice bunch of fabric from a lady in Powers. Some will be used for care quilts and some for the sale. Linda said there will be a pre-sale for the quilters.
Remember, the Fair is coming up. DeAnn brought in fair books for those who need one. We have two more new members in the guild – Christina Riggs and Judy Kennard. Welcome to the group girls. We now have 18 members.
If anyone is interested, I will have a class on the six hour quilt, just let me know.
You are a quilter if: You’ve been known to smuggle fabric into the house in grocery bags to fool your husband into thinking the grocery budget is going for food!
