PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE:

Membership Renewals:  September is traditionally the month for membership renewals.  We do appreciate everyone who takes care of it during that month, as it helps jumpstart our fiscal year.  I am including a form, for those who would like to mail it in.

Locker Renewals:  There are a few storage lockers downstairs that are rented to members for $10 each year.  As a courtesy, we will give until Dec. 1st for current renters to renew.  The lockers will then be made available to the general membership.  Several pottery members have expressed an interest in reserving lockers, and regaining use of at least part of the damp room downstairs.

McKay’s Receipts:  Thank you to everyone who contributed!  I turned in $2,261.84 in receipts, thus earning us almost $23.

Open House:  Our next open house is scheduled on Sat., Sept. 19 from 1 to 4 pm.  The Center’s permanent collection will be hung and featured that month, but I am asking that we use a part of the upstairs’ area to showcase some examples of quilts, pottery, stained glass and carving.  I look for this event to be an opportunity for us to invite the public to see the art work we do here, and use the day as a chance to recruit new members.  Please feel free to attend the event, admire our “new” floor, and invite a neighbor or friend.

Membership Picnic:  It was good to see so many people at the membership picnic.  Thank you for attending and bringing all that good food!  I had a chance to eat my first corn-on-the-cob this season, and was put in charge of drawing for raffle prizes.  Congratulations to Sherlyn Hiatt for winning a year’s membership to CVAA.

Department Reports:  At the board meeting, I asked for department reports and was able to extend the meeting an extra half an hour!  While they were very interesting, I have changed my mind.  Those departments, who make a report for the newsletter, will not need to make one at the monthly board meeting.

THANK YOU to those generous folks who made donations to our building fund.  Our next projects are bringing railings up to code, and painting the building.

Next Board Meeting:  Everyone is invited to attend.  The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Sept. 14th, starting at 10:00.  (We meet a week later than usual, because of Labor Day falling on the first Monday of the month.)

Coos County Fair:

The Coos County Fair is over for another year and ideas for the 2010 Fair are being jotted down.  Do you have any suggestions?  In the applied art and fine arts departments, entries were up by 92 over last year’s figures (fine arts up by 49 and crafts/applied art up 43.)

Congratulations to Ken Means for winning the Best of Show/Sweepstakes for his carrousel frog.  Our $20 CVAA prize for the best youth art went to 14 year old Karissa Fults for her beautiful colored pencil portrait of her sister.  Carol Turner won the Sweepstakes in the professional division for her acrylic landscape and Christy Sanders won the amateur/advanced Sweepstakes award for her watercolor picture, “Gannit Gathering”.

A big thank you to all the people who helped take in entries, hung the paintings and placed the items for judging, those who did the inventory, hung ribbons, etc.  (Pat Weaver, Maryellen and Bob Hanson, Janet Keenlyside, Linda Chisum-Lucas, Tom and Kathy Baker, Vicki Gonzales, Pat Haley, Clara VanDukhuizen, Linda Short, Kathy Phillips, Terry Magill and Gail Meuler.)  Also, thank you to the people who demonstrated and greeted the fair-goers (Norman and Verna Day, Dorthea Rice, Lael Akers, Pat Weaver, Pat Haley, Mary Mullen, Lena Wilke and Darrel Sanders.)  They also helped break up my 100+ hours spent at the Fair.

Approximately 40 CVAA members and students entered in the Fair.  This includes painters, carvers, potters, stained glass people and quilters.  We had 377 entries in the Fine Arts and 217 in the Applied Arts.  Those CVAA members and students winning ribbons included:

Lena Wilke 1 R; Lance Hammer 1 R;  Dusty Harrington-Collins 2B, 3R;  Maryellen Hanson 1W; Jean Sorenson 2R; Linda Waite 2B; Kathy Phillips 1B, 2R, 1W, 1 HM;  Darrell Sanders 1R, 1 HM; George McNair 4B, 1R; Pat Winegardner 3B, 2R; Nancy Keller 2B, 2W, 1 HM; Yvonne Marineau 1B, 1R; Monica Barnekoff 1W, 1HM; Tina Hein 1B; Joan Madden 1B, 1R; Pat Weaver 5B; Anna Crosby 1B, 3R; Dorthea Rice 2B, 2R, 2W; Chris McNair 1B, 1R;  Kathy Baker 3B, 1R, 1W; Pat Haley 1B, 2W;  Carol Kearns 2R;  Lael Akers 2B, 2R, 2W;  Mary Mullen 1B, 1R;  Aaron Grabinsky 3B, 1R;  Cindy Miekel 1B, 1R;  Verna Day 1B, 1R;  Norman Day 1B, 1W;  Shirley Helwig 1B, 1W;  Monique Reynolds 1B;  Robin Hurston 4B, 1W;  Frances Gonzales 2B;  Sharon Chapman 2B, 1W;  Linda Short 1B;  Leland Simpson 6B, 1W and Ken Means 1B and Sweepstakes.

Congratulations to all of our talented members and students.

DeAnn Shaw, Supt. of the Needle Art Dept. will submit winners from that department.  The CVAA Fair entries will hang until Sept. 1.

Fair Report – Needle Art’s Dept.

Our $25 was won by The Quilts for Giving from Coos Sand and Sea Quilters.  Linda Johnson won $25 from Coos Sand and Sea Quilters for her quilt.

Following is winners and ribbons won:

Linda Johnson, 3 blue;  Kathy Acree 1 Blue, 1 Red;  Carolyn Skaggs 1 Blue, 1 H/M and DeAnn Shaw, 3 B, 5 R and 1 white.  That is just for quilting.  Blue ribbons are 1st place, red are 2nd and white are 3rd.

Hopefully members will start coming on Tuesday so we can visit them and work on any of our fiber arts’ projects.

Most of the time I join the artists with Pat Weaver, so I guess that makes me an honorary painter (lol).  I’m sure some of you knit or crochet and could join in for a couple of hours.  Besides, it’s not too early to start on next year’s fair entries.  I promise that the judging issues that we had this year will not happen again.

DeAnn Shaw

Needle Art Superintendent

BIG THANK YOU! I wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to Maryellen and Bob Hanson, Kathy Phillips, Pat Weaver, Terry McGill and another lady friend (sorry I didn’t get her name) who volunteered and helped set up and hang the art work for this year’s great Coos County Fair.  We were able to get the job done in less time than in years past.  We really appreciate your participation and our call for help.  We look forward to seeing you and hopefully more volunteers next year at the Fair.  More hands make less work!

Again, on behalf of my husband, Tom, and me, we extend our BIG THANK YOU to you all.

Painters News:

The painters recently lost 2 of their fellow members.  John Kurka passed away Aug. 6 and Herbert Turner on Aug. 10.  Sympathy to their families.

Thanks to Janet Keenlyside for ironing and hanging the curtains in the painter’s room.

The next show will be paintings from our permanent collection.  There will be a reception on Sept. 19.

The picnic was good – lots of good eats.  Sherlyn Hiatt won the 1 year CVAA membership and there were 20 scratch-off ticket winners.

Quilter’s News

We are gearing up for the Quilt Show and fabric sale in October.  Now is an excellent time for all of us to go through our “stash” and pass on what we probably will never use.  ALL donations are welcomed.  Anyone willing to help cut, mark and get fabrics in order for the sale; will be meeting one or more Tuesday afternoons during Sept. – date will be announced later.  Let’s all pitch in.  All fabric that can be used for Care Quilts will be saved.

Remember to finish up the UFO’s so that we can include them.  ALL sizes are welcome.

It looks like Sept. 30st may be a good day to plan on hanging the quilts for the show which will hang the entire month of Oct.  The reception will be the 3rd Sat. in October from 10-4.  The fabric sale will be on the reception day only.

We have contributed 54 Care Quilts to CASA and the Sheriff’s Dept. since January.  A BIG thank you to all those who have helped with this very worthy project.

Tops for teen boys are needed at this time, so if you have suitable fabrics and would like to make some tops or blocks, they will be welcomed with open arms.

We are sorting (or have sorted) through the Quilter’s Library.  There are some fine books there, so take some time to browse.

Welcome back from Rhode Island, Carolyn.  And welcome again to our new members, Katie and Nancy.

STAINED GLASS NEWS:

The stained glass classes have been held on Friday mornings, 9:30 – 12:30; and Monday evenings, 5:00 – 8:00.  Monday night, August 17 will be the last meeting of the current sessions.  Cheryl plans to advertise the classes in the paper and see if there is further interest.  We have a core of 7-8 participants that continue to “roll over” and continue classes.  New participants will decide which day, or days, will be needed for the next session.

If you know of anyone who has an interest in taking the stained glass class, please have them contact Cheryl at 572-2439 and leave a message.

Kathy could you please send me your phone number via email so that I can talk with you personally? I am a member and student of Anna Crosby’s. We have met several times during my class. I would call you but do not have your phone number. Joe and I will be leaving Oregon for SoCal on Tuesday, but I will have email access on the way home.

    Thank you
